Elizabeth Ruf (Account Executive at Walk West) will share her insights and moderate this panel of higher education specialists. Why higher education? Elizabeth Ruf is a digital marketer with a passion for making a difference through her work. As an Account Executive at Walk West, Liz leads accounts for strategic communications clients, managing issue advocacy campaigns and government affairs work. With seven years of nonprofit marketing experience and specialized expertise in social media management and advertising, Liz uses her skills to bring offline advocacy strategies and tactics to the digital space. Driven by caffeine and good music, she loves the collaborative energy in the Triangle. She holds a bachelor’s degree from UNC Asheville and a Master of Public Administration from NC State.
Drew Sykes is Director of Social Media at NC State. He is a writer at heart and took his love of storytelling with him when he began his career in digital marketing at Ignite Social Media, the “original social media agency.” There, he managed the content and communities for the social media presence of global clients like Radisson Hotels and Club Carlson and developed thought leadership stories for the agency blog. He returned to his alma mater in 2014 when he became NC State’s first-ever social media specialist. Since then, he’s helped grow his position into a team effort that has become the Social Media Strategy Hub. Go Pack!
Philip Jones is Director of Social Media at UNC Chapel Hill. Philip loves nothing more than telling a good story. For almost seven years he did his storytelling on television as a news reporter and anchor. Now, he tells the stories of his alma mater through UNC-Chapel Hill’s social media channels. Philip joined Carolina’s social media team at the start of 2015 after almost two years in the same role at Elon University. He plans and executes Carolina’s social media content, strategy, marketing, real-time reputation management efforts and ambassador programs that engage thousands of Tar Heels on a daily basis.
Sonja Likness is Director of Social Media and Content Strategy at Duke University. Sonja joined Duke University in 2014 with extensive experience in social media and brand-building as well as analytics and cross-platform planning. As the director of social media and content strategy at Duke, her responsibilities include University-wide social media consultations and strategy, content development and distribution, analytics reporting and strategy.
