A blog will only help your business if it can be found easily online and if it can hold people’s attention. High blog traffic and fresh content are guaranteed to expand the reach of your business and marketing efforts.
Here are six tips for attracting more readers to your blog:
1. Be consistent
The first and most important rule in creating a successful blog is to be consistent with updating and maintaining it. You need to create relevant material on a regular and predictable basis to keep followers engaged and to attract new blog traffic. If you take a hiatus from blogging, you can seriously hurt your rank in search engines as well as your reputation with your readers. And if you ever plan to take a break because of a vacation, you can always write a post or two that can be auto-scheduled to post while you are away. Another great idea is to recruit a guest blogger.
2. Guest blog
Invite bloggers to write a guest post for your blog. Target bloggers who are relevant to your field and who already have a strong and legitimate following. Your guest bloggers will promote their posts through their own networks and you can reciprocally do the same by including links to their products, services and social media profiles in their guest posts.
Also, look for non-competing blogs in your field that have a consistent readership and offer to write guest posts for them. It may take time before an established blogger accepts your invitation, but provide a unique angle to make it difficult for them to say no.
3. Research keywords while writing
Don’t think about keywords after you’ve already written your blog post. Your keyword research process should help guide the topic of your post. Find out what people are searching for; what is new or current on their minds? Google also has a free AdWords Keyword Tool that will match phrases to your topics.
4. Use images and graphics
Hold an audience’s attention is by giving them something visually appealing. Your blog posts should always include at least one image. Ideally, you would have taken or created the photo or graphic yourself, but for those with less time on their hands, you can easily buy stock images to use. You can also look for images at Flickr’s community forum, but make sure to cite your source and give credit where it’s due!
5. Comment MORE than you post
Blogs with lots of comments receive more punch in search results. So why comment on other people’s blogs? To get link-back juice and gain credibility. In your comments, cite useful resources that can be found on your website or blog and provide readers with the links. Be as helpful as you can, and avoid sounding spammy.
For every new post, make it a rule to comment on two blogs: one that you already have a connection with, and a completely new one. This will help bring visitors to your blog as well as help with your overall branding.
6. Tweet it! Post it! Pin it!
In our social world, this should be a no-brainer by now. There are a million and one ways to share images, videos and blog posts with your social network, so make the most of it! This is where having a good image incorporated into your blog will help. Photos and videos are naturally more interesting for people to share with their friends, so make it easy for them to do so by including social media sharing widgets on all of your posts.
Bonus: Your email signature should say more than your name!
You already have links or icons to your social networks, so why not add a link to your blog in your email signature as well? Your contacts are likely already interested in what you have to say. Additionally, if something in an email message reminds you of your blog, go ahead and introduce your blog to your reader.
